Setting out garbage
- Put cans or carts out after 6 p.m. the night before pickup, or by 6 a.m. on the day.
- Homes on automated routes get city-issued carts. Set the cart at the edge of the road with the wheels facing the house and the lid closed. Extra bags beside the cart are not collected.
- Homes not on automated routes can use bags or their own cans.
- Bag all household garbage. No tile, concrete or bricks in the can.
- Leave 3 feet around carts and piles so they clear mailboxes, cars and recycling bins.
Recycling: two bins
Curbside recycling is weekly and costs nothing extra, the city’s brochure says. The city does not provide recycling carts; residents buy them at home improvement stores.
- Yellow bin, paper: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, mail and boxes. Flatten boxes and cut them into 3-foot by 3-foot pieces.
- Blue bin, containers: steel and aluminum cans, bottles and jars, drink boxes, milk cartons and plastic containers numbered 1 to 7.
- Keep plastic grocery bags, foam and electronics out of both bins.
Bulk trash and yard waste
Bulk and yard waste are picked up weekly, on your bulk day.
- Bulk trash: up to 3 cubic yards a week of furniture, appliances and mattresses.
- Construction debris: fencing, cabinets, carpet and tile, up to 1 cubic yard a week.
- Vegetation: one pile of up to 3 cubic yards. Cut limbs to 4-foot lengths and no more than 4 inches thick. Bag grass, leaves and coconuts.
- Keep bulk, construction debris and vegetation in separate piles. The crew will not take a mixed pile until the resident sorts it.
- Paint cans go out only with the lids off and the paint dried.
- Hot tubs must be cut into four pieces, with one piece out per pickup.
Anything bigger, including stumps and trunks wider than 4 inches, needs a special pickup for a fee. Request it through the MyBoynton app. The city also rents 10-, 20- and 30-yard roll-off containers; order by 2:30 p.m. the business day before delivery. Fees are in the city’s solid waste fee schedule (PDF).
Trash put out too early, mixed piles and oversize piles draw a service charge. The city leaves a door hanger, and if the pile is not fixed within 24 hours, it is removed and at least $50 is added to the water bill.
Amnesty weeks still ahead in 2026
- Tire amnesty, Nov. 30 to Dec. 4: up to eight car or truck tires, with or without rims, at the curb on your bulk day, kept apart from other piles. There is no make-up day.
- Vegetation amnesty, Dec. 7-11: you can put out more than 3 cubic yards of vegetation on your bulk day at no charge. The usual cutting rules still apply.
Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. The city asks residents not to trim trees or put out bulk piles once a storm is named, because there is no guarantee crews reach them before it arrives. See the Palm Beach County hurricane prep guide.
Hazardous waste, sharps and pills
Electronics, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, antifreeze, wet paint, chemicals, A/C units and medical waste do not go in the trash. Take them to a Solid Waste Authority transfer station, which takes home chemicals and recycling. Call 561-687-1100 for disposal instructions.
Unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicine can go in the drop box in the Boynton Beach Police Department lobby at 2100 High Ridge Road, open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Needles and sharps go to a Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County site; the closest listed are the Lantana/Lake Worth Health Center, 1250 Southwinds Drive in Lantana, 561-547-6800, and the Delray Beach Health Center, 225 S. Congress Ave., 561-274-3100, according to the city’s hazardous and bio waste page.
